Communicative Language Approach (CA)

Communicative Language Teaching is an approach to the teaching of second and foreign languages that emphasizes interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of learning a language. It is also referred to as "communicative approach to the teaching of foreign languages" or simply the "Communicative Approach"(CA). (From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communicative_language_teaching)

There are five basic teaching characteristics of CA:
1. Teach learners to communicate through interaction in the target language.
2. Use authentic situations and texts as way to teach the target language.
3. Create or use opportunities for learners to focus, not only on language but also on the Learning Management process.
4. Use learner's own experiences as elements of learning in the teaching environment.
5. Use links between the teaching environment and the outside world as a link and or tool to provide language learning and activities.
(David Nunam, EFL student textbooks published by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, and the EFL publishing division of Cengage Learning.)

CA can include any teaching practice that helps students develop their communicative competence using an authentic context as long as it is an acceptable and beneficial form of instruction. Thus, in the CA teaching environment the use of pair and group work requiring language functions such as negotiation can often be found. CA promotes cooperative situations for learners participate within fluency-based activities. These activities are used to encourage learners and to support the development of their confidence in using the target language. Additionally, scenarios and role-plays are used for students to practice and develop language functions. Students are also given focused activities to help them cautiously use grammar and pronunciation.

Using the Communicative approach is used by most teachers worldwide. Some of the Oxford Press publications use the communicative approach better than others. Choose one that make sense to you. Make sure it deals with all four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is best if the text deals with things that you want to or need to learn.

    Best of luck,
