Examples of
Art Deco
Because of the
booming economy and growth in technology during the 1920s, the
design elements of Art Deco were luxurious, modern and
sophisticated. Let's find some well-known examples of Art Deco
which still exist today - in New York City, USA.
Prometheus
Sculptor: Paul Manship
1933
Rockefeller Center, New York City
This is one of the most famous sculptures in New York City -
perhaps in the whole world. Prometheus was an ancient Greek god who
stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals to use. It is located
in a plaza called the Rockefeller Centre in front of the GE
Building - a skyscraper which is also part of the Art Deco
movement.
The
Empire State Building
Designer:
Gregory Johnson
Completed: 1931
New York City
The Empire State Building is 102-storey Art Deco skyscraper in New
York City. The building's opening coincided with the Great
Depression in the United States, and as a result much of its office
space went unrented. The photos shown are the building itself as
well as the inside of the main lobby.
The
Chrysler Building
Architect:
William Van Alen
1930
New York City
The Chrysler Building is considered a masterpiece of Art Deco
architecture. The distinctive exterior of the building is based on
features which were then used in Chrysler automobiles. The corners
of the 61st floor are graced with eagles - replicas of the
1929 Chrysler hood ornaments. Its distinctive
crown at the top of the building is made of stainless
steel.
"One of the first uses of
stainless steel over a large exposed building surface…The lobby is
a modernistic composition of African marble and chrome steel."
Elliot Willensky and Norval White, AIA Guide to New York
Atlas
Sculptor: Lee Lawrie
1937
Rockefeller Center, New York City
The statue of Atlas, like Prometheus, located in the Rockefeller
Center in NYC. It faces St. Patrick's
Cathedral. Made of bronze, this sculpture represented Atlas - an
ancient Greek god who carried the heavens.
Atlas is himself is 15 feet tall, whereas the entire sculpture is
45 feet tall. Lee Lawrie was a German-American architect who
created this sculpture in collaboration with Rene Paul
Chambellan.
