Kate Moss: Art or Not? (Discussion)

MayMay saidMon, 06 Oct 2008 12:25:26 -0000 ( Link )

Last week, Kate Moss - a fashion icon, was sculpted in gold.

A new statue of the controversial model was unveiled at a British museum for an exhibition this month. The statue, entitled “Siren”, depicts her in a yoga contortion.

Marc Quinn, the artist behind the art piece takes credit for designing the largest gold statue to be produced since the time of Ancient Egypt!

I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Does Kate Moss deserve the kind of compliment normally reserved for Egyptian queens and mythological goddesses? Or has Quinn created a masterpiece?

There definitely is a symbolic value in using gold to create the statue. However, whether the subject should have been different or not is a debatable topic.

May,you make a statement that anyone in Gold would cause a stir.
Do you not think in a society where celebrity is King and controversy is our breakfast lunch and dinner, that any person would get a reaction?
I think finding a person of celebrity and controversy and telling the world it has created a goddess out of them speaks volumes.
This art has a meaning we may not all like to hear.

I like it, there should be more statues made of gold. use more gold. the more gold is used for sculptures the higher the price of gold the happier I am….of course stop driving your car so that the price of gas goes down…thanks

It’s quirky enough to put it in a time capsule

Different era of art altogether. I was looking at the era created and ideals behind the suject.
I like your vision of it, however.
