I just had a debate about what art is last weekend with a friend of mine. He was describing a piece of art by an artist who just won a prestigious prize that sounded more like an innovative process rather than art to me. I have included the image. It is by Jeremy Hof, and called “Layer Painting Red”.
He won the prize because he impressed the judges with his mathematical approach toward painting that reveals itself upon close inspection. According to the judging panel, “What appeared to be a two-dimensional surface revealed itself as a three-dimensional, layered structure, confounding our understanding of what a traditional painting is.”
Is this art? Perhaps. Does it deserve a prestigious prize? The judges said it won because it confounded their understanding of painting. For me, innovation for innovation’s sake is not does not contribute to art’s greatness.

I find myself in agreement with Malgosia - the art piece does look like a ‘precess’.According to me art is the ‘opposite of logic’ or rather ‘is a higher form of order’ which appeals to our hearts rather than our minds… All objects that follow a ‘system’ and can be explained through ‘equations’ and logic by our minds - to me move towards being more of a science than an art…
However some people do consider all ‘novelty’- an art - which seems to be the case with the judges.- Actions

art is more of feeling and less of mind..
if u have feeling…there are 3 ways to express
1 words
2 signals/ guestures/ expresions
3 is by colours ( may be black and white as they are colours also) which i say is art..
its just as simple as salt in ocean you can feel it but couldnt see it…just diffrences comes when i draw a picture as per my feelings, my understanding and my tone/ nature and some one dont consider it art becuse he is not able to connect his feelingswith mine which i wnat to comunicate…. so some times what is art for me may not be gud art to one and vice versa…
in begining its more of theme.. when new artist display their work they display under some theme…so that you can judge their work in the light of that theme…you can understand their feelings ’ how they see nation , how they see night..etcetc..later on when they become famouse you can see a connection between what they draw….see picaso paintings, you can see his signature of shapes, see vinci perfect finish of manalisa..etc etc…
just you see connection between their work and you like them more than others- Actions

Very well said. I think art is about stealing as much as you can from as many people, and making it something your own. Well, I don’t really mean “steal” so much as I mean inspiration. You have to be inspired from something. One good thief is worth ten good scholars.
As for what art is NOT. I’ve tried to give it some thought, but I think real art is neither “authoritative” nor “dictative”. At least not in the ironic sense. Hmm…it’s so hard to try and describe.
